The PlayStation 5, also known as the PS5, is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and manufactured by Sony. One of the 9th-generation video game consoles, it was first released on November 12, 2020.

Appearance[]

Console[]

Original Models[]

The original launch console models has a sleek modern look. The console's appearance is a tall, thin, rounded black square with blue lighting highlights around the edges, wrapped from the sides to the back in a white material. The console has a small black circular platform for the console to stay in place and not fall over.

On the disc version, there's small "bulge" on the right side where the disc drive is located. It is absence on the digital edition of the console, creating a more symmetry look for it.

Slim models[]

The Slim models, which supersedes the original models in November 2023, are smaller. Instead of two faceplates, the Slim models now has four faceplates. The Slim models now feature an user-removable disc drive, and owners of the digital version of the Slim model can attach a disc drive (which sold separately and comes with a disc drive cover plate). Additionally, a USB-A port on the front was replaced by a USB-C port.

The vertical stand is no longer bundled with the Slim models and must be purchased separately.

PlayStation 5 Pro[]

Released on November 7, 2024, the PlayStation 5 Pro is essentially a taller Slim model with wider middle gap in between the two faceplates on each side.

Oddly, it doesn't come with a disc drive, but can be equipped with the disc drive that was made for the Slim model.

Retail Box[]

Design[]

The retail box's design is like the DualSense's. The box for the PS5 is white (The Digital edition's is black) with the same blue overlay/strip across the top, alongside the Sony logo. The iconic "□△×○" PlayStation icons are present in the background, and the main image is of the console and the DualSense controller. On the right of the logo is the PS5 logo.

Contents[]

For the original launch models, it comes with the console itself, a DualSense controller, a HDMI cable, an AC cable, a USB-A to USB-C cable, a console stand and a user manual.

The box contents for the Slim models and PlayStation 5 Pro are similar, but with the USB-A to USB-C cable swapped out for a USB-C cable and a console stand removed.

Features[]

HDR[]

A feature that was carried over from the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5 supports HDR output. To enable HDR, the console must be connected to a TV or monitor with HDR support.

Variable Refresh Rate support[]

The PlayStation 5 support variable refresh rate (VRR) technology via the HDMI Forum VRR specification. To enable VRR, the console must be connected to a TV or monitor with HDMI Forum VRR support. FreeSync-over-HDMI, a proprietary technology by AMD, is not supported.

Video disc playback[]

Just like prior PlayStation consoles, the PlayStation 5 support video disc playback. New to the PlayStation 5 is the support for Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc, which is also a primary disc media for physical PlayStation 5 game titles.

It should be noted that it is not supported on the digital version of the launch model; the digital version of the Slim model and PlayStation 5 Pro can support video disc playback with a disc drive attached to them. Just like the PlayStation 4, audio CD playback is not supported.

Remote Play[]

A feature carried over from the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5 supports Remote Play, where it can stream to a remote device like a smartphone (Android and iOS), a PC (via the PlayStation Remote Play app) and a PlayStation Portal handheld.

It should be noted that on PC, a DualSense or a DualSense Edge controller must be connected via USB in order to play PlayStation 5 titles with Remote Play. Also, certain games on the console will block Remote Play from functioning.

Storage expansion[]

Unlike the PlayStation 4 where it has a user-removable 2.5-inch drive, the PlayStation 5 has a soldered-on, non-removable SSD (825 GB on launch models, 1 TB on Slim models, and 2 TB on PS5 Pro). To combat this shortcoming, the PlayStation 5 has an M.2 bay in which user can insert any off-the-shelf PCI-E Gen 4 M.2 NVMe SSD into it. It should be noted that not all M.2 heatsinks can fit into the M.2 bay.

The upper capacity limit the console can support for the off-the-shelf SSD is 8 TB.

Bundled game[]

Each PlayStation 5 console is preloaded with Astro's Playroom.

Appearances in media[]

Astro's Playroom[]

In the game, the disc version of the launch PS5 model appears as an artifacts. It can be obtained through the Gatcha Game after beating the 1994 Throwback level.

The disc version of the Slim model was later added to the game with the July 2024 game update, and can be obtained in the similar way as the original launch model.
