- This is about the controller itself. For Astro Bot's spaceship, see Dual Speeder. For the pro-orientated variant of the controller, see DualSense Edge.
The DualSense is a video game controller developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and manufactured by Sony, first released on November 12, 2020. Made for and released alongside the PlayStation 5, it is a successor to the DualShock 4.
Appearance[]
Controller[]
The DualSense is a medium sized video game controller with a rather large black overlay around the middle-bottom edges. The L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons near the rear of the controller share the same black coloring (with the exception for color variants like the Chroma color models where they are in different colors). Around the top clickable touchpad, there are blue lights that go orange/red when charging. The Create and Options buttons are placed on each side of the pad and tilted to make it look nicer. The PlayStation symbol buttons and the arrow buttons are placed in the same spots as the PS4.
As of December 2024, there are 13 regular color models and 10 limited edition models available. One of those limited edition models is modeled after Astro Bot's Dual Speeder.
Retail Box[]
The DualSense's retail box for the standard color models is a white box with a small blue strip around the top, with the Sony and PlayStation logos right below. The background has the iconic "ā”ā³Ćā" PlayStation symbols, and in the middle is the DualSense controller. On the bottom right, there is the text "DualSenseā¢" below that, there is "Wireless Controller" and "For PS5ā¢" in multiple different languages. The retail boxes for the limited edition models are similar, with the white background being swapped out for different background and sports the game title's logo.
The retail box of the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Edition is the only one that have different graphical art, as it recreates the classic packaging design of the original PlayStation console that was used during the console's early life-cycle.
Features[]
Motion sensing[]
A feature that was carried over from the DualShock 4 (which in turn carried over from the DualShock 3 and Sixaxis), the DualSense has sets of gyroscopes and accelerometers built-in, allowing for motion control with 3 axis and 6 degree-of-freedom.
Touchpad[]
A feature that was carried over from the DualShock 4, the DualSense has a clickable touchpad.
Built-in speaker[]
A feature that was carried over from the DualShock 4, the DualSense has a speaker built into it.
On PC, it is only supported when connected via USB.
Adaptive Triggers[]
The DualSense has the resistance-based Adaptive Triggers, a type of analog triggers with force feedback mechanism. The triggers can either vibrate or push back when the feature is in used.
Support for Adaptive Triggers on PC vary depending on the PC game title; some PC games does support the feature over Bluetooth, while some are not.
Haptic Feedback[]
The DualSense has the regular rumble motors replaced by the voice-coil actuators, which provides much linear actuation. The voice-coil actuators, which also act similar to speakers, are augmented by the audio-based Haptic Feedback technology, in which they provide detailed haptics.
On PC, it is only supported when connected via USB (otherwise, it will work in a less-detailed simple rumble mode in certain PC titles). The voice-coil actuators will actuates when audio data is sent to channel 3 and 4 of the controller's audio device.
Built-in microphone[]
The DualSense has a built-in microphone, allowing for voice chat without any external microphone. It will be disabled if a headset with microphone is inserted into the controller's 3.5mm jack, however.
Just like audio-based Haptic Feedback, it is only supported when connected via USB when used on PC.
Appearances in media[]
Astro's Playroom[]
The DualSense appears as an artifacts in the game. It can be obtained through the "One More Thing..." level after beating the 1994 Throwback level.
In addition, in the 2024 update of the game, several new artifacts were added via the Gacha Machine, one of them being the Dualsense Edge controller, a variant of the Dualsense.
Astro Bot (2024)[]
In this game, Astro rides a small spaceship throughout the world map, and the beginning and end of levels, known as the Dual Speeder, which resembles the Dualsense controller. The Dual Speeder also occasionally serves as power up in levels during specific situations (Examples: Throwing shuriken platforms in Dojo Danger, or spraying water in Trunk of Funk).
There is also an area within the Crash Site that can be unlocked where you can customize the appearance of the Dual Speeder, some of them resembling the actual color variants of the real life Dualsense.
Trivia[]
- The DualSense is the first PlayStation controller to support firmware update, which is done by either using the PlayStation 5 console, or on PC using the PlayStation Accessories app.
